Gathering Business Intelligence from Interview Notes with Natural Language Processing

Level: Advanced

Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools and techniques can help internal audit teams to effectively and efficiently analyze unstructured textual data using free open-source software. Having researched and implemented the use of NLP within the Canada Revenue Agency’s Audit Evaluation and Risk Branch, the Data Analysis section has seen first hand how NLP tools and techniques are underutilized across the internal audit industry and has taken the opportunity to demonstrate how understanding and applying them can add value. Natural Language Processing and its techniques can be applied in stages of the internal audit process, and we encourage others to invest in the development and use of these tools and techniques.

This presentation will also describe the structure of our Data Analysis section, the milestones we reached to get where we are today, and how others can build an effective and efficient Data Analysis shop.

Learning objectives for session participants:
• Explore how NLP can be applied to extract valuable information out of large volumes of textual data.
• Discover the benefits of topic models, text summaries, word clouds, word associations, and sentiment analysis.
• Learn about other potential uses of NLP that can provide auditors with valuable insights.
• Discover the mindset and investment required to build a robust data analysis shop within an organization.
